The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge stemmed from a simple idea with a simple goal — to strike out ALS — and turned into a viral phenomenon.

By now you’ve seen countless friends, family members, athletes and celebrities participate in the challenge by dousing themselves with a bucket of ice water, but how did the incredible movement start?
