Julian Edelman might want to keep his emotions in check the next time he scores an exhilarating punt-return touchdown.

The NFL fined the New England Patriots wide receiver $5,512 for throwing a football into the crowd Sunday night during his TD celebration against the Denver Broncos.

Edelman’s TD put the Patriots ahead by two scores, so he undoubtedly was jacked up with adrenaline when he chucked the ball into the Gillette Stadium stands.

The NFL views throwing the football into the stands as a safety issue. It doesn’t want fans fighting over balls or falling over railings.

For the record, the league didn’t fine Patriots running back Shane Vereen after he threw the ball into the Gillette crowd earlier this season against the New York Jets.

Edelman is having a great season for the Patriots with 54 receptions for 556 yards with three total touchdowns (two receiving, one on punt return).
