Hockey is a funny game.

After St. Louis Blues defenseman Barret Jackman engaged in a spirited bout with Jarome Iginla of the Colorado Avalanche toward the end of the first period of Saturday night’s game, the blueliner showed off his softer side and made a friend from the penalty box.

The second period began with the two players still having to serve a good chunk of their major penalties, so Jackman thought it was as good a time as any to endear himself to the opposing crowd. As Jackman skated over to the box, he noticed a timid little cutie staring at him through the glass. Jackson first waved to the little girl, then slid over closer to her and flashed a smile.

Hockey players — they’re all giant teddy bears when they aren’t beating the crap out of each other.
