Kevin McHale has one of the best teams in the NBA, a new freakishly gifted forward and now more than $12 million to play around with for the next three years, according to several reports.

Merry Christmas to him.

The Houston Rockets announced Wednesday that they had signed McHale, now in his fourth season as the team’s head coach, to a contract extension. The three-year deal is worth “in excess of $12 million,” ESPN.com reports.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey congratulated McHale on Twitter.

McHale has guided the Rockets to the fourth-best record in the Western Conference, where they are a legitimate NBA Finals threat. They received a boost Wednesday with the reported signing of free-agent forward Josh Smith, who was waived by the Detroit Pistons on Monday.

McHale, one of the greatest power forwards in the history of the game and a three-time champion with the Boston Celtics in the 1980s, is 153-104 in his three-plus seasons in Houston.
