The Boston Red Sox’s outfield just got less crowded for the time being.

Center fielder Rusney Castillo will miss “more than a week” of spring training with a left oblique strain, manager John Farrell said Wednesday, per CSNNE.com’s Sean McAdam. The Cuban rookie experienced some soreness in his third and final at-bat of Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Boston College.

Speaking through an interpreter, Castillo said the injury was “nothing serious,” prior to Wednesday morning’s workout, but after being examined by team doctors, Farrell confirmed it was serious enough to sideline the outfielder for some time.

According to McAdam, there’s no timetable, but Farrell said the outfielder will be “down for a while.”

Castillo, who led off against BC and went 1-for-3 with a single in his first at-bat, is competing for the starting center field job with Mookie Betts.
