The Red Sox need to bolster their rotation, whether it’s over the offseason or before the 2015 Major League Baseball non-waiver trade deadline. Boston has been doomed by inconsistency from its pitching staff all season, creating a rather grim outlook despite a couple of positive developments.
Let’s be real: The Red Sox probably aren’t going to pursue any rentals, as they have a ton of ground to make up in the American League East. Boston is more apt to sell players with expiring contracts than acquire such players. So don’t expect David Price, Jeff Samardzija, Mike Leake or any other impending free agents to walk through Fenway Park’s doors this season unless it’s as a visitor.
Boston instead needs to pursue starting pitchers who can help beyond 2015. The following is a list of starting pitchers the Red Sox could consider going after in the coming days. It’s based on nothing more than speculation and previously reported rumors.
