UPDATE (8:53 p.m.): David Backes suffered a right leg laceration that required multiple stitches. He is resting and will not return to the game, the Bruins announced on Twitter.

Original Story: David Backes can’t catch a break.

The Boston Bruins forward exited Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning late in the first period after appearing to get his right leg cut by a skate.

He and Tampa forward Yanni Gourde both hit the ice and went sliding into the net Lightning net. Gourde ended up spinning a bit, and in doing so, his skate appeared to go across Backes’ leg.

After it happened, Backes kneeled in the crease to look at what just happened, then skated with all his weight on the opposite knee toward the bench. He was met by a trainer on the ice and immediately taken down the tunnel and into the dressing room. It was clear he was bleeding as he skated off the ice.

He was not on the bench at the start of the second period. You can watch the collision here.
