The Boston Red Sox got off to a rough start Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays, and it got worse during the seventh inning.

With the Red Sox trailing 5-2, Joey Wendle ripped an RBI double off the Green Monster. After having trouble playing the ball off the wall, J.D. Martinez’s throw got away from Xander Bogaerts. The Red Sox shortstop chased the errant throw as it trickled toward the third base dugout. Bogaerts’ momentum carried him into the dugout, and he slid down the steps and appeared to injure his ankle.

The Red Sox training staff came out to check on him, but he eventually had to be helped off the field and into the locker room.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora did not have an update on Bogaerts following the game beyond saying the shortstop suffered a left ankle injury will be reevaluated Monday, which is a scheduled off day. The Red Sox did win, however, using a six-run eighth inning to claim the 8-7 victory.
