Are we in for another quiet deadline day?
RECAP: NFL trade deadline was, for the first time in a long time, a doozy. At least seven trades were made including some legitimate star players who should not only impact the playoff race and the Super Bowl hunt but will have lasting ramifications beyond the 2022 season.
As the dust continues to settle, NESN.com will have full coverage and reaction with in-depth analysis of what it means in the short and long term.
If you missed any of Tuesday’s action, get caught up with how it all went down in real time below.
4:25 p.m.: One more deal at the buzzer for the Chiefs, a minor move to say the least — well, for anyone other than Rashad Fenton.
4:19 p.m.: The Packers weren’t alone in their inactivity.
4:12 p.m.: One team that could have benefited from making some sort of deadline deal: the Packers. One team that didn’t make a deadline deal: the Packers.
4:08 p.m.: Here are the full reported details on the Colts-Bills trade sending Nyheim Hines to Orchard Park:
4:05 p.m.: There was certainly speculation about Kareem Hunt, but he’s reportedly staying put, with no suitors meeting Cleveland’s demand.
4:03 p.m.: The Houston Texans stayed quiet, and they’re reportedly holding on to one of their most valuable trade assets: receiver Brandin Cooks.
4 p.m.: The Bills pulled off a buzzer-beater. The NFL’s best team just got better, reportedly landing running back Nyheim Hines from the Colts.
3:23 p.m.: The Broncos have had a busy day, and they’re replacing Bradley Chubb with Jacob Martin in a deal with the Jets, per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.
3:18 p.m.: To say the Calvin Ridley trade between the Jags and Falcons is complicated would be a slight understatement.
3:05 p.m.: One name that wasn’t on anyone’s radar entering the day: Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley. That’s in large part, of course, because the NFL suspended him indefinitely for gambling. Once he returns, he’ll do so with the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to multiple reports, Atlanta is dealing the talented receiver to Jacksonville.
3 p.m.: The Dolphins can’t stop! It appears running back Jeff Wilson is going to be reunited with Mike McDaniel as Miami and San Francisco are swinging a deal, per reports.
2:35 p.m.: Trent Brown reportedly is not expected to be dealt, but he had quite the cryptic tweet.
According to Brown, though, it was just a false alarm.
2:25 p.m.: Another Patriots rival, the Miami Dolphins, made a big trade while acquiring Bradley Chubb.
1:35 p.m.: Another NFC North trade for a pass-catcher, but this time it’s the Bears getting in on the mix. They’re acquiring Chase Claypool from the Steelers, according to multiple reports.
12:35 p.m.: A quick update on the details for that Lions-Vikings trade sending T.J. Hockenson to Minnesota.
12:25 p.m.: We’ve got a trade, and it’s a big one — in the division, no less.
The Minnesota Vikings have bolstered their tight end position, reportedly acquiring T.J. Hockenson from the Detroit Lions, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.
Here’s what Minnesota will send the Vikings, per the report:
2023 second-round pick
2023 fourth-round pick
2024 conditional fourth-round pick
12:15 p.m.: Still no movement, but as always, we probably should keep an eye on the defending Super Bowl champion Rams, whose season has not gone to script thus far.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer recently reported Los Angeles — no stranger to parting with draft capital — was willing to trade two first-round picks and running back Cam Akers to land Carolina Panthers linebacker Brian Burns.
10:45 a.m.: The biggest news so far on deadline day? The Colts have fired their offensive coordinator.
9 a.m.: A couple of early updates on a pair of AFC skill-position players.
Pro Football Focus’ Doug Kyed followed up ESPN’s Adam Schefter’s report about interest in Colts running back Nyheim Hines, saying the Rams and Bills were both among the teams showing interest in Hines. That’s in addition to the Eagles, who reportedly have had interest in the past. ESPN’s Stephen Holder also reported the likelihood of a Hines trade is high.
Kyed also reported the Patriots might be looking to offload some salary ahead of the deadline. One (potentially surprising) team to watch: the Chicago Bears. According to Kyed, the Bears have called to check in on Kendrick Bourne, but it sounds like New England might not be willing to move the veteran receiver.
8 a.m.: The NFL trade season got an early start and should come to a crescendo Tuesday with the 4 p.m. ET trade deadline.
We’ve already seen a flurry of activity in the days and weeks leading up to Tuesday. We’ve seen a pair of former first-round picks moved in the last week, with the Chicago Bears trading linebacker Roquan Smith, a top-10 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, to the Baltimore Ravens. Last week, the New York Giants shipped 2020 first-round pick Kadarius Toney to the Kansas City Chiefs to bolster their receiver room. Yet, no move has been as big as the Carolina Panthers’ decision to offload superstar running back Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 20. All he did in his second game with the Niners was run for a touchdown, catch a touchdown and throw for a touchdown in the same game.
As for who’s left to be moved Tuesday, the most robust market appears to be running back. New Orleans Saints playmaker Alvin Kamara could be the most impactful player moved, but it sounds like his preference is to stay in The Big Easy. Meanwhile, Kareem Hunt — fresh off a relatively quiet performance in the Browns’ Monday night win — is “down for whatever” and could be a cheaper alternative to Kamara.
What exactly can we expect for Tuesday, though? Well, deadlines might spur action, but recent history tells us we’ve seen most of the activity already. ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday morning tweeted a graphic breaking down NFL trades since 2012. There have been 20 deadline-day deals since 2012 for an average of two per year, not including 2022. In the same stretch, there were 47 deals in the week leading up to the deadline.
Regardless of what happens, we’ll be tracking it all right here, so keep it here all day for all the latest news, rumors and analysis ahead of the 2022 NFL trade deadline.
