The Boston Bruins had a terrific chance to capture two points Tuesday night against the Buffalo Sabres, who owns the worst record in the Eastern Conference.
But instead, the Bruins, who were without Hampus Lindholm, Charlie McAvoy and Brandon Carlo, suffered one of their worst losses of the season.
Buffalo ran away with a lopsided 7-2 win over Boston at KeyBank Center, and Bruins captain Brad Marchand didn’t bite his tongue following the demoralizing defeat.
“We’re obviously desperate right now, and we can’t afford to have games like this where we are not prepared,” Marchand told reporters, per team-provided video. “We need every point, and they’re a better team than what their record shows. You can’t take that team lightly. They’re extremely skilled and (have) some of the most talented players in the league. So, you need to come prepared to play and ready to compete harder than that. They got a couple of saves at the right time where it could have been a little different game, but we still didn’t push hard enough.”
The Bruins clung to a brief sign of hope midway through the third period when Marchand scored to cut the deficit to 4-2. But the Sabres responded with three unanswered goals, including one just 30 seconds after Marchand’s tally, to put away Boston.

“We give ourselves a chance there in the third … we got time left on the clock and very next shift, we go out there and give up a goal. You’re not going to win like that,” Bruins defenseman Mason Lohrei told reporters, per team-provided video.
