Boston Red Sox star Alex Bregman put together a career performance Tuesday night when he went 5-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs in a 7-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

But Bregman won’t get the opportunity to follow up on that outstanding showing Wednesday.

The 31-year-old third baseman has a more important matter to attend to that will keep him out of the series finale against the Rays. Bregman is flying back to Boston to be with his wife for the birth of their second child.

“He has a few things the upcoming days family-wise, so to have a great day like this is kind of like the beginning of a great week for him,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters, per NESN.

The Red Sox could easily move Rafael Devers to third to fill Bregman’s spot, but according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, Boston plans to call up Nick Sogard with Bregman going on the paternity list.

Sogard batted .273 with no home runs and eight RBIs in 31 games for the Red Sox a season ago. He played every infield spot for Boston — except catcher — which included seven appearances at the hot corner.

Sogard is off to a tough start with Triple-A Worcester this season, hitting .159 with four RBIs and two stolen bases in 12 games.
