The Red Sox know they will be playing into October this season, but which team they will meet in the postseason has yet to be determined.
Boston is still battling with Oakland for the American League’s best record, and the Rays, Indians and Rangers continue to jostle for the league’s two wild card spots, meaning that AL playoff picture likely will not become crystal clear until the final weekend of the regular season.
But for the Red Sox and their fans — and fans of good baseball, in general — Boston’s most desirable ALDS opponent is clearly Cleveland.
Not only would a series between Terry Francona and his former club bring with it a boatload of intrigue, but a date with the Tribe would also allow Boston to avoid a divisional-round matchup with Tampa Bay or Detroit, who both boast dangerously deep starting rotations.
