David Ortiz Would Like to See National League Add Designated Hitter

David Ortiz is, by trade, a designated hitter. So you can understand why he's partial to the inclusion of the DH in baseball.

Ortiz has had to sit idly in the dugout lately, as the Sox are in the middle of an extended stretch of interleague games in National League parks. He went 0-for-2 with a walk in three pinch-hit appearances, and he went 0-for-4 on Wednesday night in his only start of the trip.

Aside from that, though, Ortiz said he'd simply prefer seeing someone who's used to hitting step into the box, rather than a pitcher.

"It'd be great [if both leagues used the designated hitter]," he told NESN's Heidi Watney from inside the Sox' clubhouse in Philadelphia. "I hear a lot of people talking about tradition, and things like that, but I guess you need to turn the page.

"Me personally, I'd rather see a position player hit better than watching a pitcher [hit]. Every time you see a pitcher out there swinging the bat, it's a big percentage of chances that something bad happens. … I think it's better just to see somebody that's out there on a daily basis swinging."
