The southpaw received the news that he would be making his first start of the 2012 season against the Blue Jays on April 9 on Sunday. Upon walking into the clubhouse, the 24-year-old was seemingly relieved.
"It was awesome and it was the best news from the manager to say I have the first game in Toronto," Doubront said. "For me, that's what I’ve been looking forward to all spring and even when I started my offseason. To hear that news, it's pretty amazing."
Doubront has arguably been the most consistent pitcher this spring, surrendering just 18 hits and five runs through 16 2/3 innings of Grapefruit League action. He's also fanned 10 batters along the way.
He ultimately cemented himself in the rotation with his last outing against minor league competition on Thursday, throwing six innings and yielding two hits to go along with four strikeouts.
"I have to keep working to get those innings," Doubront said. "And work hard."
Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine later said Daniel Bard would round out the rotation as the fifth starter.
