Red Sox minor league prospect Mathew Price has been suspended.
The 22-year-old has been suspended for 50 games by the commissioner's office for a second violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program for drug of abuse.
The suspension will be effective immediately, as Price will miss 50 games with the Greenville Drive Single-A affilate of the Boston Red Sox.
The team's eighth-round pick in 2010, Price has pitched in only three games in the minors due to Tommy John surgery in September 2010. His ERA is highert than 5.00 in just 3 1/3 innings pitched.
