Darko Milicic Waived By Celtics After He Asked for His Release to Tend to Sick Mother

Darko Milicic‘s Celtics career is over before it really ever began.

The Celtics announced on Wednesday that they have waived Milicic, per his request. The center only played one regular-season game with the team.

Milicic is returning to Europe to be with his sick mother. Doc Rivers confirmed that Milicic left the team earlier in the week to return to Europe and did not expect him to return. The Celtics announced that Milicic asked for his release.

“Darko has asked us to release him so he could deal with a personal matter,” said Danny Ainge. “The whole Celtics family wishes Darko and his family well.”

This could be the end of Milicic’s roller coaster ten-year career. He was drafted by the Detroit Pistons No. 2 overall in the 2003 NBA draft directly in front of four All-Star players: Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and Chris Kaman.
