Report: Oakland A’s Donate Full Playoff Share to Charity at Jonny Gomes’ Urging

To the winners go the spoils, but the Oakland A’s are making us all feel like winners.

The A’s awarded a full playoff share worth $34,325.16 to charity on Monday, reportedly at the behest of new Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser, Gomes suggested that the A’s set aside a full share of their playoff winnings for charity, and his teammates unanimously agreed.

Gomes, who has a reputation as a good clubhouse guy, is only going to reinforce that belief with more actions like this as he prepares for the next two years in Boston with the Sox.

Major League Baseball awarded playoff shares to the 10 lucky clubs who qualified for the postseason on Monday, with the World Series champion San Francisco Giants each earning $377,002.64. The players vote on who to dole out full and partial shares to, which normally is used to judge a reflection of a player’s impact on the team despite only participating for only part of a year.

For the A’s, however, the impact will be felt beyond the clubhouse.
