Rex Ryan‘s job is safe, right?
The Jets fired general manager Mike Tannenbaum on Monday, but owner Woody Johnson said then that Ryan would remain as coach. Now, with the team looking for a new general manager, some people are wondering whether Ryan’s status will be revisited.
Ryan has yet to talk to the media since the season ended Sunday. He canceled his Monday news conference and a radio interview that day.
Now, Manish Mehta of the Daily News reports, Ryan has left the area. He “flew out of town” Wednesday morning and “won’t be back to the team’s Florham Park headquarters on Thursday, either,” Mehta reports.
The trip is “of a personal nature,” Mehta says, noting, “all indications are that Ryan took a mini-vacation as the Jets’ brass figures out its next move.” Mehta also said that NFL head coaches are required to address the media within the week after the season’s final game.
If his future is indeed still in limbo, it sounds like Ryan just wanted to take a break. But the signs don’t look good for someone who appeared to have escaped the ax just a few days ago.
The Jets announced a short time later that Ryan will address the media next Tuesday.
