Alfredo Aceves Optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket, Corresponding Roster Move to Be Made on Thursday

Alfredo AcevesThe Red Sox finally ran out of patience with Alfredo Aceves – at least for the time being.

The Red Sox announced that they have optioned Aceves to Triple-A Pawtucket. The move comes just one day after Aceves struggled mightily against the Athletics while starting in place of the injured John Lackey.

Aceves’ somewhat controversial behavior has led to widespread speculation about his long-term future in Boston, but it’s the right-hander’s ineffectiveness that ultimately did him in. Aceves gave up eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings on Tuesday, and he’s been very inconsistent since last August.

Following Tuesday’s game, Aceves made a comment about the Red Sox’ offense that some interpreted as a shot at his teammates. Manager John Farrell said before Wednesday’s game that he didn’t think Aceves was calling out his teammates, but it was clear that the skipper expected more from the pitcher.

“I think the bottom line is just that — the bottom line. And you’ve got to perform to continue to get opportunities,” Farrell said before Wednesday’s game.

Now that Aceves is heading down to Pawtucket, it’s likely that Allen Webster will start Sunday’s game if Lackey is still unavailable.

No corresponding roster move has been made, and according to the team, that move will be made on Thursday.
