The NHL allows teams to recall players from their American Hockey League clubs on an emergency basis, and the Bruins certainly have an emergency right now.
The B’s will be without three of their regular forwards Sunday night in Toronto, which led them to make a couple of emergency call-ups. The club announced Sunday afternoon that forwards Ryan Spooner and Matt Fraser had both been recalled from Providence on an emergency basis. They’re expected to join the team in Toronto and play on Sunday night as the Bruins will be without Loui Eriksson, Chris Kelly and Shawn Thornton after Saturday night’s game against Pittsburgh.
Spooner has appeared in six career NHL games and is currently leading Providence in points. He has five goals and 19 assists in 21 games with the Baby B’s this season. He was up with the big club for two games this season and notched a pair of assists during that time.
Fraser, who was acquired from the Dallas Stars as part of the deal that sent Tyler Seguin to Dallas and brought Eriksson to Boston, is having himself a fine season. He’s second in the AHL with 16 goals to go along with five assists. He’s second on the P-Bruins in scoring to Spooner. He appeared in 13 NHL games with the Stars, collecting a goal in an assist in time during last season and the 2011-12 season when he made his NHL debut.
