Reports: Veteran Outfielder Scott Cousins Released By Boston Red Sox

Scott Cousins, Buster PoseyScott Cousins’ tenure with the Boston Red Sox didn’t last very long.

The Red Sox released Cousins, according to SoxProspects.com’s Mike Andrews and MLBDailyDish.com’s Chris Cotillo. Cousins signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox in January and spent spring training with the organization.

Cousins mostly is known for barreling over San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey in 2011, leading to a broken leg that ended the backstop’s season. The 29-year-old outfielder spent the 2013 season in the Los Angeles Angels organization, appearing in seven games with the big league club.

Cousins, who hit .233 with one homer and 19 RBIs in 52 games with Triple-A Salt Lake last season, is a career .179 hitter (32-for-179) with two homers and nine RBIs in 135 games over parts of four seasons at the major league level.

The Red Sox also released outfielder Juan Carlos Linares and pitcher Francisco Taveras, according to Andrews.
