It was clear from the moment it happened that Mike Fiers had made a terrible mistake.

The Milwaukee Brewers pitcher immediately placed his hands on his head after he lost control of a pitch during the fifth inning Thursday night, hitting Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton in the face.

Fiers, who had not hit a batter all season but proceeded to nail pinch hitter Reed Johnson with the next pitch, as well, tweeted an apology to Stanton after the game.

“It was very tough. I’ve never in my life experienced something like that,” Fiers said, via the New York Daily News. “I just want to send my thoughts and prayers and everything to Giancarlo Stanton. You never think of throwing at somebody like that. Never in my life has that happened. I just feel very, very sad that I hit him. I’m sorry to their teammates, their fans, his family. It is just tough.”

Stanton, the National League leader in home runs with 37 and major league leader in RBIs with 105, was carted off the field. The 24-year-old suffered facial fractures, lacerations and dental damage, according to the Marlins.
