Report: Miguel Cabrera Was Joking About Not Accepting Postseason Bonus

Miguel CabreraIt sounds like Miguel Cabrera will receive his postseason bonus after all.

Cabrera was merely joking when he told Detroit Tigers teammate Max Scherzer earlier this week he wouldn’t sign paperwork for the bonus because all he wanted was “the ring,” a Major League Baseball Players Association official told ESPN.com on Thursday. Multiple sources told ESPN.com that Cabrera will sign the necessary forms and receive his postseason bonus.

A full share of the postseason bonus for players on last season’s World Series champion Boston Red Sox was worth $307,000 — pennies when you consider the 10-year, $292 million contract Cabrera signed with Detroit last offseason.

Cabrera declined comment when asked about the story Thursday before the American League Division Series opener against the Baltimore Orioles, according to ESPNDeportes.com.

If the Tigers’ pitching keeps imploding the way it did in Game 1 at Camden Yards, the chances of Cabrera winning his second ring will shrink. Maybe it was smart for Cabrera to accept the money.
