Jeff Bianchi wasn’t gone very long.

Bianchi, who elected free agency Saturday after being outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket, signed a one-year major league contract with the Boston Red Sox before Sunday’s game against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Park. Robbie Ross Jr. was optioned Pawtucket after tossing three innings against his former team in Saturday’s 8-0 loss.

Bianchi cleared waivers before rejecting his outright assignment Saturday. The 28-year-old utility man played just one inning with Boston upon being selected to the active roster last weekend when Shane Victorino landed on the 15-day disabled list. Bianchi, who has 163 games of major league experience, hit .302 with a .373 on-base percentage in 17 games with the PawSox this season.

Ross allowed two runs on three hits Saturday in relief of Wade Miley. The 25-year-old left-handed reliever has shuttled back and forth between Boston and Pawtucket this season. He owns a 5.29 ERA in 15 major league appearances spanning 17 innings with the Red Sox.
