FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots valued linebacker depth over an extra pass-catching running back.

The Patriots cut running back Travaris Cadet on Tuesday to make room for linebacker Jon Bostic, who was acquired in a trade with the Chicago Bears. Cadet signed as a restricted free agent over the offseason after the New Orleans Saints failed to tender the fourth-year pro.

Cadet was beat out by Dion Lewis for the Patriots’ third-down back role. Running back James White was active over Cadet on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Gillette Stadium.

Cadet finished his Patriots tenure with one catch for 2 yards in one game. The Patriots are left with Lewis, White, LeGarrette Blount and Brandon Bolden at running back.

Bostic gets added to a linebacker group that includes starters Dont’a Hightower, Jamie Collins and Jerod Mayo and top reserve Jonathan Freeny. Pass rushers Rob Ninkovich and Dekoda Watson also have experience at linebacker.
