Torey Lovullo Loves Red Sox, But Would Be ‘Honored’ By Managerial Offers

CLEVELAND — Torey Lovullo’s resume has never looked better.

Lovullo was an intriguing managerial candidate before he became the Boston Red Sox’s interim skipper when John Farrell stepped away from the team to treat his Stage 1 lymphoma. Now, with the Red Sox on a solid run to close out the 2015 season, it’s reasonable to wonder what’s next for Lovullo.

“I haven’t really thought much about that,” Lovullo said of potential managerial offers this offseason. “I haven’t really any expectations of anything other than staying right where I’m at right now. I love the Boston Red Sox. I’d be honored if something did come my way, but a lot of that is out of my control.”

Lovullo has long been considered a future major league manager. He interviewed for managerial gigs with the Houston Astros, Texas Rangers and Minnesota Twins last offseason — it’s believed the Twins’ decision came down to Lovullo and current manager Paul Molitor — and he even interviewed for the Red Sox’s managerial job before the club hired since-fired Bobby Valentine prior to the 2012 season.

The opportunity to manage full-time in The Show has alluded Lovullo to this point, however. And perhaps it will again based on several factors, including the sheer volume of openings before next season. But Lovullo definitely has stepped up amid a difficult situation for Farrell and the Red Sox.

It’s hard to imagine the rest of Major League Baseball hasn’t taken notice.
