Washington Capitals left wing Alex OvechkinAlex Ovechkin added another line to his Hall of Fame résumé Sunday night, rifling a shot past Ottawa Senators goaltender Andrew Hammond to become the fifth-fastest NHL player to reach 500 career goals.

So, to commemorate the occasion, we decided to compile a list of The Great Eight’s eight greatest.

It was not an easy process.

The Washington Capitals star has lit the lamp 501 times since entering the NHL in 2005 — he added another later in Sunday’s 7-1 rout of the Senators — and dozens upon dozens of them could make an argument for inclusion on this list.

But the line must be drawn somewhere, and the number that one day will hang from the rafters at the Verizon Center seemed like a logical cutoff point. So without further ado, here are our picks for the eight greatest goals of Ovechkin’s storied career.
