Just like they did when John Smoltz hit the market, National League teams are already pouncing on discarded Red Sox starter Brad Penny.
According to ESPN.com, Penny — who is making his way through waivers right now — is drawing the interest of at least three NL clubs, including the Rockies, the Giants and the Marlins.
Because Penny is still owed about $1 million — plus up to $500,000 in incentives depending on the number of innings he pitches – for the rest of the season, other teams are unlikely to claim him off waivers. Instead, they will wait until he clears waivers, after which he will only cost about $100,000.
ESPN.com reports that Colorado could be the perfect destination for Penny, who owns a 6-1 record at Coors Field in 11 starts.
Reports also indicate that Tampa bay and Texas may be interested in Penny, but — like Smoltz and Cliff Lee — he could have more success in a NL setting.
