Most baseball fans view 2010 as the year of the no-hitter.
Others see it as the year in which MLB umpires proved to the world that America’s pastime desperately needs video replay to become a regular part of each game.
From Adrian Beltre to Ryan Howard to Armando Gallaraga, there are a handful of major leaguers that would agree that this summer has been a tough one for the men in blue.
Whether it’s a rookie ump pounding his chest and having a quick trigger finger, or Joe West trying to speed things up so he can catch the late-night menu at Denny’s, or Jim Joyce simply slipping up — umps can’t consider 2010 a successful year.
But for every bad call exploited all over the media for days — sometimes weeks — there are likely about a dozen good calls that go unnoticed.
