One of the greatest big-game pitchers in Red Sox history was honored at Fenway Park on Monday night.
Luis Tiant was honored in a pregame ceremony celebrating the 35th anniversary of Tiant’s late-season heroics in 1975.
Tiant helped the Red Sox clinch the American League East title that year, then went 3-0 with a 2.65 ERA in four postseason starts, including a five-hit shutout against the Cincinnati Reds in Game 1 of the World Series and a 163-pitch victory in Game 4.
Tiant, who turns 70 in November, was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1997. In eight seasons with Boston, the right-hander went 122-81 with a 3.36 ERA and finished his career with a 229-172 record in 19 seasons.
The former All-Star hurler was joined by Red Sox legends Dwight Evans, Bill Lee and Johnny Pesky on the field. Tiant then received a luxury watch from the Red Sox and threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
