Steve Hauschka Hits 53-Yard Field Goal in Overtime to Give Locomotives 24-21 Win Over Colonials

Final, Las Vegas 24 – 21: Hauschka drills the 53-yarder right through the middle of the goal posts, and the Locos win the UFL's first regular season overtime game.

The Locomotives move to 4-1, and are now in sole possession of first place in the UFL standings.

Despite playing well in spurts, the Colonials fall to 1-4, and any chance they had at postseason play is now all but dead.

Overtime, 0:23, 21-21: After two running short running plays and an incompletion on 3rd and 8, the Locos' Steve Hauschka is left with a long 53-yard field goal attempt for the win.

The Colonials call timeout in order to ice the Locos' kicker.

Overtime, 2:00, 21-21: Dorsey rips off a 10-yard run on 3rd-and-long, and now has 170 yards total for the game.

Colonials' linebacker Simoni Lawrence is injured on the play, and play is stopped with two minutes remaining in overtime.

Overtime, 4:10, 21-21: Mehlhaff misses the kick wide right, and the game continues. You could see the wind really take a hold of that one, as it looked good coming off of his foot.

Overtime, 4:10, 21-21: The Colonials are working their way into field goal position, but Mehlhaff will be kicking into the considerable wind swirling around Sam Boyd Stadium.

Linebacker Ed Hartwell lays a Ray Lewis-esque hit on Jennings behind the line, but Booker counters with a solid 5-yard run. Booker tries another run but is stifled after one yard, and Mehlhaff is left to try a 38-yard field goal.

Overtime, 7:26, 21-21: The Colonials are saved on an outstanding catch by Patrick Carter, who leaps on a high throw by McCown. Chris Jennings fumbles the ball on the next play, but is able to recover.

McCown then completes a big pass to Steptoe, who was wide open down the middle, and gets down to the Locos' 32 yardline.

Overtime, 11:22, 21-21: The Locos keep attacking on the ground with Dorsey and Shipp, then take a shot deep with Samie Parker. Parker is unable to make the tough catch, and Las Vegas is forced to punt.

Overtime, 13:40, 21-21: A pretty uninspiring drive for the Colonials, as they go three-and-out after a failed boot-leg and 3-yard run. Hernandez fair-catches the ball near the Locos' 40, and now the next team to score will win the game.

End of 4th, 21-21: Fassel was clearly willing to let the clock run out, as Dorsey was ripping off big chunks of yardage on his runs but a timeout was never called.

The Locomotives win the toss, and elect to kick off to the Colonials.

4th quarter, 1:04, 21-21: McCown completes a pass to Steptoe in the end zone, and the game is tied. That was a pretty remarkable drive considering how bad the Colonials' offense looked for most of this game.

4th quarter, 1:04, Las Vegas 21-19: Tyson Devree catches a 4-yard touchdown pass from McCown, and the Colonials need a two-point conversion to tie the game. The Locos can't be happy with that coverage, as Devree was pretty much wide open.

Locos' head coach Jim Fassel calls time-out and scans the Colonials' offense.

4th quarter, 1:27, Las Vegas 21-13: McCown delivers with a 5-yard pass to McBride over the middle. Hartford calls their first timeout, and have the ball on the 5 yardline. They need to get to the 2 for a first down.

4th quarter, 2:00, Las Vegas 21-13: The Colonials will face 3rd and 3 when the two minute warning ends, and need a first down here. They still have three timeouts, so they aren't limited to the pass.

4th quarter, 2:58, Las Vegas 21-13: It seems as though every time the Colonials get a big play, McCown or Perriloux is then immediately sacked for a big loss. Locos defensive end Ryan Boschettie burts through the offensive line and plants McCown firmly on his backside.

McCown then completes a pass to Carter, who dives for the first down but comes up just short. The Colonials go for it on fourth down, and McCown rifles a 5-yard pass for a first down.

4th quarter, 6:20, Las Vegas 21-13: The Locos get the ball on the one yardline after a pass interference call on Colonials' defensive back Ryan Palmer in the endzone.

Marcell Shipp runs the ball in up the middle, and is almost untouched by defenders as he waltzes into the endzone for a score.

4th quarter, 8:13, Las Vegas 14-13: Dorsey rips off a 37-yard run, and now has the first 100-yard rushing game of his career. Las Vegas is driving, and the Colonials defense looks a little tired.

Given the way their offense has performed to this point, it's hard to blame them.

4th quarter, 9:34, Las Vegas 14-13: A sloppy drive for the Colonials, as Chery drops two accurate passes in a row. McCown is sacked on third down, and the Colonials are once again forced to punt.

Las Vegas will take over just short of their own 20, and can put themselves in a great position by scoring again here.

4th quarter, 12:42, Las Vegas 14-13: Perriloux enters the game for the Colonials, but is ineffective after completing one first down. The Colonials' offense is utterly stagnant right now, and it's not hard to see why the Locomotives have allowed the fewest points in the UFL.

End of 3rd, Las Vegas 14-13: The Bergen touchdown seems to have energized the Locos' defense, as they're flying around the field. Hartford faces a second-and-long when the fourth quarter begins, but will have the benefit of the wind at their backs in the game's final quarter.

3rd quarter, 0:54, Las Vegas 14-13: Willy throws a 4-yard touchdown pass to tight end Adam Bergen, who catches the ball in the back right corner of the endzone. The Locos looked like a different team on that drive, and the Colonial defense is starting to open up a little.

Willy still hasn't looked good on any deep passes, but Dorsey and Shipp are helping to take some of the pressure off him with good runs.

3rd quarter, 2:19, Hartford 13-7: It's safe to say Willy has a favorite target in Dorsey, who he has consistently looked for during check-downs all day. The Locos convert with a pass to Dorsey on a big 3rd and 6, and now have a 1st and goal from the 8.

3rd quarter, 6:03, Hartford 13-7: After a three-and-out by the Hartford offense, the Locomotives take over near their own 40. The Locos find themselves in a 3rd and 15 after a holding penalty, but a screen pass to Dorsey results in a 16-yard run and a first down.

The Locos are starting to move the ball better now, and if they can avoid penalties and turnovers, they look like they can put together a solid drive here.

3rd quarter, 9:09, Hartford 13-7: The Locomotives can't capitalize on Hartford's mistake, as Steve Hauschka misses a 39-yard field goal wide right. The Locos just can't catch a break today, and they're putting a lot of stress on their defense.

3rd quarter, 10:39, Hartford 13-7: Trufant picks McCown at the Hartford 30, and the Locomotives have new life. McCown has no one to blame but himself for that throw, as Trufant was sitting on the rout.

3rd quarter, 12:10, Hartford 13-7: The Locos receive the ball first, and make some headway with short passes and nice running by Marcell Shipp. Willy is sacked for a big loss, however, and after a big third down conversion is called back thanks to a holding penalty, Las Vegas must punt once again.

Halftime, Hartford 13-7: Mehlhaff drills home another short field goal to give the Colonials a six point lead at the half.

It's been a sloppy game for both teams, but the Locomotives are really hurting themselves. Willy looks like he lacks confidence in the pocket, and the Colonials are content to let him try and beat them with his arm.

You have to feel for Locos running back Dede Dorsey, who tried to give some extra effort on his last run but ended up costing his team with a foolish play. Deep in his own territory with less than a minute to play, Dorsey has to know that ball security is the number one priority, and should have remained down after he fell while planting to cut up-field.

The Locos came into the game with the UFL's toughest defense to score against, but Hartford's defense has been suffocating in this one so far. If Las Vegas keeps turning the ball over at an alarming rate, they have little chance.

2nd quarter, 0:29, Hartford 10-7: Las Vegas' comedy of errors continues, as Dorsey fumbles on a needlessly aggressive run. The Colonials recover at the Loco's 29, and are in position to score again before the half.

2nd quarter, 0:44, Hartford 10-7: Willy is feeling it now, and completes a 26-yard pass to a wide open Samie Parker down to the 10 yardline. Marcell Shipp runs it down to the three, but then disaster strikes for the Locos.

Willy steps back to pass on the next play, but is strip-sacked by Emmanuel Cook. Defensive end Derek Walker picks up the ball and lumbers down the field for a 96-yard touchdown run. Shipp almost caught up to Walker at the end, but was blocked by Ryan Glasper.

The play is under official review, but should stand.

2nd quarter, 2:00, Las Vegas 7-3: Perriloux is back in the game for the Colonials, but a bad snap leads to a 21-yard loss for the struggling offense. Hartford has to punt for their five yardline, and Las Vegas takes over across midfield with just under two minutes left to expand their lead.

2nd quarter, 4:27, Las Vegas 7-3: The Locos are caught in no-mans land, and go for it on 4th and 11 from the Colonials' 33. Willy completes a 12-yard pass to Tab Perry to keep the drive alive, and the Locos are threatening for the first time today.

Doresy rips off an 18-yard touchdown run, breaking several tackles on his way to the endzone. Kyle Whitehurst had a chance to make a play on Dorsey at the 7, but Dorsey is able to run around him.

2nd quarter, 5:54, Hartford 3-0: The Loco's offense is finally starting to make some noise, as Willy completes a 13-yard pass on 3rd down to Andrae Thurman. The Colonials are stacking the line to prevent the run, and Willy's going to have some open receivers.

Thurman beats the defense and Willy has an easy touchdown staring him in the face, but overthrows the ball. The Locos are really missing Tim Rattay right now.

2nd quarter, 7:56, Hartford 3-0: Or not. Baker levels Dixon on an inside run, and Dixon fumbles the ball. Baker was shaken up on the play but was able to leave the field under his own power.

The Loco's recover on their own 41, and Dorsey immediately rips off a 10 yard run to his right for a first down.

2nd quarter, 9:05, Hartford 3-0: The Colonials successfully execute an on-side kick, as kicker Taylor Mehlhaff beautifully chips the ball about 12 yards. McCown completes a 13-yard pass to Jason Chery on the Colonials' second play, and Hartford is in business.

2nd quarter, 10:00, Hartford 3-0: Hartford stirkes first, as McCown completes a 17 yard pass which is followed by a 15 yard penalty on the Loco's for an illegal defense.

The Loco's have the league's best Red Zone defense, though, and manage to hold the Colonials to a field goal for the game's first points.

2nd quarter, 12:56, 0-0: McCown completes a pass right at the first down marker to receiver Jason Chery, who is forced out of bounds. The ball is ruled just short, and the Colonials try to infuse some life into their stagnant offense by going for it on 4th and inches.

McCown runs a quarterback sneak, getting the two feet he needed, and the Colonials' drive will continue.

2nd quarter, 13:02, 0-0: The call is overturned, meaning what has to this point been the game's most exciting play doesn't count. The Colonials' offense comes back on the field, and is faced with a 2nd and 7.

2nd quarter, 13:24, 0-0: McCown starts the quarter and throws a pass to WR Tyson Devree, who loses the ball when tackled on what was arguably a dirty hit by Lewis Baker. It's ruled a fumble and Isiah Trumant picks up the ball and runs it 46 yards into the endzone, but this call is going to be overturned after the challenge, and the game will remain scoreless.

2nd quarter, 14:01, 0-0: Dede Dorsey starts the 2nd quarter by running for 5 yards, leaving the Locos with a 3rd and 5. Receiver Samie Parker makes a 3-yard catch, but the Locos are once again forced a punt.

Colonials' wide receiver Syndric Steptoe returns the punt to the 43, giving Hartford their best field position of the game. It will be interesting to see whether Hartford opts for McCown or Perriloux on this next drive.

End of 1st, 0-0: So much for progress. Perriloux throws two incompletions, and the Colonials are once again forced to punt from their own half. Brian Hernandez catches the ball on his own 11, and the Locos run one play for no yards as the quarter ends.

It's been a game for fans of defense so far, as neither the Locos nor the Colonials has even threatened to score.

1st quarter, 1:38, 0-0: The Colonials convert on 3rd and 3, as tight end Tyson Devree catches the ball and falls forward on a quick pass. This has been the most successful drive for either team to this point in the game.

1st quarter, 4:53, 0-0: The Colonials change things up by bringing Ryan Perriloux in at quarterback. McCown is a better pure passer, but Perriloux is a better athlete and offers more upside.

Lorenzo Booker rips off a 9 yard run for a first down on the second play of the drive, then runs for three more yards on first down.

1st quarter, 5:19, 0-0: The Locomotives come out firing on their second drive, and Willy completes a first-down pass to Tab Perry on the first throw of their possession. The Locos then find themselves in a 3rd and 7, but Willy's pass is broken up by linebacker Danny Lansanah.

The Colonials will start their third drive from their own 20.

1st quarter, 7:23, 0-0: Andre Dixon runs for a first down, bringing the Colonials to their own 30. McCown then takes a 10 yard sack, nullifying Dixon's pickup. An unsuccessful run and an incomplete leave the Colonials trotting off the field on a 4th and 14.

1st quarter, 9:42, 0-0: An ugly first possession for the Locomotives, as they fail to get a first down. Probably not what Drew Willy was looking for in the beginning of his first UFL start.

1st quarter, 11:24, 0-0: Hartford receives the ball first, and their first possession ends in a punt after a big stop by the Locos on third and short. Colonials quarterback Josh McCown looked alright on that drive, but overthrew a few receivers. The Locos will take over around their own 28.

8 a.m.: With the first half of the UFL’s second season now in the rear-view mirror, the Colonials and Locomotives enter their Week 6 battle in very different positions.

The Locos are tied with the Omaha Nighthawks for the league’s best record at 3-1.  On the other hand, the Colonials are just 1-3, and are running out of time if they hope to remain in the hunt to reach the UFL Championship Game.

Defending champion Las Vegas has not lost since Week 1, when they suffered a seven-point loss to the Tuskers, who boast the league’s best defense.

Despite the apparent mismatch, the Colonials would appear to be better than their record suggests, as they have lost their last three games by a total of just 19 points – the majority of which came in Hartford’s 33-20 loss against the Florida Tuskers in Week 4. They Colonials will rely on Josh McCown and the league’s best passing attack to take down a tough Las Vegas defense that leads the UFL in interceptions.
