FORT MYERS, Fla. — It was a day of rest for Adrian Gonzalez on Wednesday in Red Sox camp.

The slugging first baseman, who first started swinging a bat earlier in the week, did take part in infield practice, looking very sharp in doing so, but did not do much more than that. He is expected to ramp it back up with the bat on Thursday.

"He cut back on everything. Just cheerleaded," manager Terry Francona said. "He feels good but [taking a day off is] what we really wanted him to do."

Francona had indicated that Gonzalez would be able to dictate his day.

Gonzalez, who had surgery on his right shoulder in October, was given clearance to begin swinging Monday. He took 20 cuts off the tee that day and 30 more on Tuesday.
