However, the deadline has come and gone, and the Celtics have poached the players they wanted via buyouts, and it would appear that what you see is what you get for the green the rest of the way.
The big move, of course, was the trade of Kendrick Perkins to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Initially, plenty of fans were ready to run Danny Ainge out of town, but as time has gone on (and as Perkins and Nate Robinson miss time due to injury), Celtics fans are getting a solid look at what they got in return.
What they got, was Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic, two players who were relatively unknown in these parts, especially as they played in Kevin Durant's shadow in Oklahoma City. In Green, the Celtics have gotten a very good offensive player. After a slow start with the C's, Green is starting to find his way, averaging 14 points per game in his last four contests. His biggest contributions, though, may come in the versatility he possesses that will give him a chance to spell both Ray Allen and Paul Pierce down the stretch and into the playoffs.
Krstic is a far cry from the type of player Perkins was, but on the offensive end especially, that's a good thing. He's opened eyes by averaging just under 14 points per game since coming to Boston and turned in his finest performance in a loss to the 76ers on Friday night, pouring in 16 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.
The Celtics also added depth by signing a couple of bought-out or released players. The most notable pickup would probably be 6-foot-11 Troy Murphy. The Notre Dame product is off to a slow start, but he just isn't in true game shape right now. If he's able to do so for the stretch run and into the playoffs, he could be a valuable asset, especially when you consider the injury problems that have saddled the Celtics in the frontcourt.
The C's also hope that they've found Rajon Rondo a suitable backup point guard. The latest player to try and fill that position is former Heat point guard Carlos Arroyo. The Puerto Rican native was released by the Heat after they picked up Mike Bibby, and the Celtics swooped in and nabbed the veteran guard. Arroyo certainly won't fill up the statsheet, but having another point guard in addition to Rondo who can handle the ball could prove to be very valuable.
