The New York Rangers blocked 18 Bruins shots on Monday night, but one of them proved to be a killer.
Ryan Callahan stepped in front of a Zdeno Chara blast with less than two minutes left in the game, and he now has a broken leg to show for it.
It was previously reported that Callahan had broken his ankle by the New York Post's Larry Brooks after practice on Tuesday. It is now being reported by the Associated Press that Callahan has a broken right leg.
"[Callahan] will be out indefinitely. It's long-term," Tortorella said.
The injury will not require surgery to fix, but it is likely season-ending.
Brooks reported that former Boston University defenseman Matt Gilroy will move up to fill Callahan's forward spot.
Callahan has 23 goals and 25 assists in 60 games this season, averaging just short of 20 minutes of ice time per game.
"There's nothing good about this," Tortorella said, according to Brooks, "but we have to try and turn it into something that will help team. Could be galvanizing."
The Rangers currently sit just one point ahead of Buffalo for the eighth and final playoff spot, but they have a four-point edge on ninth-place Carolina. The Hurricanes, however, have a game in hand on the Rangers, who have just two games left in their season.
