The Red Sox have signed 12 of the 53 players they selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft earlier this month, the organization announced Friday.
Among those signed is left-handed pitcher Miguel Pena, the sixth-round pick out of San Jacinto Junior College, and first baseman Travis Shaw, a standout at Kent State University who was selected in the ninth round.
Pena was a National Junior College Athletic Association All-American honorable mention selection after going 10-3 with a 1.91 ERA in 14 starts for SJJC. Shaw led the Mid-American Conference with 14 home runs and hit .307 (75-for-244) with 51 RBIs in 62 games for the Flashes. His father, Jeff, pitched in the majors for 12 seasons.
Also signed Friday was third baseman Matt Gedman out of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Taken in the 45th round, Gedman is the son of former Red Sox catcher Rich Gedman, who spent 11 seasons in Boston. Matt Gedman was a First-Team All-Star selection by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association after leading the Atlantic 10 Conference in hitting with a .402 (76-for-189) mark.
The organization also inked two other players with connections to New England, right-handers Brenden Shepard (28th round out of Stonehill College) and Corey Vogt (39th round out of Keene State College). Shepard is a native of Boxford, MA.
Also signed Friday was left-hander Kevin Brahney (11th round), right-hander Mike McCarthy (14th round), right-hander Andrew Jones (18th round), outfielder Drew Turocy (24th round), first baseman David Chester (33rd round), catcher Carlos Coste (35th round) and right-hander Jadd Schmeltzer (49th round), who attended Cornell University.
