The Pawtucket Red Sox granted the release of pitcher Kevin Millwood on Sunday, ending his 11-week tenure in the Red Sox organization.
The 36-year-old Millwood signed with the Red Sox as a minor league free agent on May 19 and joined Pawtucket on June 1. In 13 starts for the Paw Sox, Millwood was 5-1 with a 4.28 ERA, striking out 66 hitters while walking 25. The team was 11-2 in his starts.
Millwoood is in his 19th season of professional baseball and he holds a career record of 159-137 in Major League Baseball. He enjoyed his most success with the Braves in 1999, going 18-7 with a 2.68 ERA, finishing third in the NL Cy Young Award voting. That postseason he went 2-1 for Atlanta, tossing a complete game and also earning a save in the NLDS against Houston.
