Kenny Dalglish-Sir Alex Ferguson Rivalry Takes Dynastic Turn

A seemingly innocent question by a reporter provoked an annoyed retort from Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson after Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Benfica.

“I don’t know why you ask these questions. You are just looking for stupid little things,” the 69-year-old boss said to the questioner.

It is nothing new for Ferguson throw a verbal jab at a member of the press.

This time, the reporter who asked the question is ITV’s Kelly Cates, who just happens to be the daughter of Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish.

Ferguson and Dalglish have been linked since 1969. The two Glasgow (Scotland) natives briefly faced each other as players, but became fierce rivals as Manchester United sought to end Liverpool’s dominance of the English game in the 1980s and establish their own in the 1990s.

Last year’s Champions League runners-up visited Benfica to open this season’s competition and escaped Lisbon with an undeserved point. The game included a reportedly exceptional performance by their backup goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard. The Dane made a string of second-half saves that preserved the draw for his team.

Lindegaard joined Manchester United in January in a £4.4M ($6.9M) move from Norway’s Aalesunds FK. Yesterday was only his third appearance for the EPL champions. He backs up the club’s No.1 David De Gea, but the £18M ($28.4M) Spanish goalkeeper’s United career is off to such a rocky start that there is already pressure on Ferguson to bench him.

Cates asked the question that is on everybody’s mind. Given Lindegaard’s performance against Benfica, will Ferguson drop De Gea for Sunday’s clash against Chelsea? See the video below for his reaction … which was priceless.
