Ben Cherington, Red Sox to Bring Dale Sveum, Another Candidate Back for Second Round of InterviewsDale Sveum certainly sounds like a favorite to be awarded the currently vacant Red Sox managerial job. However, it sounds like he’s not the only favorite left in the running.

New Boston general manager Ben Cherington spoke at the baseball’s GM meetings about the ongoing search to replace Terry Francona, and Cherington said that at least one other candidate will be brought in for a second interview.

“We expect there will be one,” Cherington said, according to The Boston Globe. “But at this point it’s possible it won’t happen in Milwaukee. We’re still working through that process. We’re still narrowing in on at least one other finalist. It’s a combination of that and logistics.”

Theo Epstein and the Chicago Cubs are also looking for a new manager, and Cherington also admitted Tuesday that the Cubs’ search complicates matters some as well.

“We don’t have the field to ourselves, so that is a factor. It probably affects timing more than anything. I do think the jobs are different and the same person is not necessarily the right fit for both job.”

Sveum is slated to have his second interview with the Red Sox on Wednesday, and he’s also expected to have another interview with the Cubs this week as well.

Cherington also indicated that he’ll be headed to the Dominican Republic soon. He’ll be there to not only do some work on the international scouting department, but to check in on Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes.

“He’s certainly an intriguing talent,” Cherington said, according to the Globe. “He’s a guy who has performed in Cuba. He’s a right-handed hitting outfielder with tools and power, and he has been impressive in some workouts. But we need to get to know him a lot better, and we’ll know him a lot better after we get down there this weekend than we do now.”
