Erik Bedard Signs With Pittsburgh, Red Sox Didn’t Have Many ‘Substantive’ Talks With Lefty

DALLAS –– Erik Bedard will not be returning to the Red Sox. After going 1-2 in eight appearances with Boston, the lefty pitcher inked a one-year, $4.5 million deal with Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

"We didn't have a lot of substantive conversations with him," Red Sox general manger Ben Cherington said. "We enjoyed our time with Erik. It didn't end up the way he wanted it and it didn't end the way we wanted it."

The Red Sox acquired Bedard from the Mariners in a three-team trade with the Dodgers on July 31. Boston shipped Chih-Hsien Chiang to Seattle and also received Josh Fields in the deal.

"[Bedard's] a good guy and a talented guy," Cherington said. "Seems like he got himself in a good spot."
