Barcelona made it official. It is the greatest soccer team on earth. In fact, it’s one of, if not the, best teams in a generation. Victory in the Club World Cup only rubber stamped what the world already knew.
Back in England, Liverpool was impressive in its win over Aston Villa. Manchester United took all the points from its road trip to QPR and Arsenal slipped up at league-leading Manchester City. The top six teams in the English Premier League are poised to separate themselves from the rest of the pack over the hectic holiday period.
Elsewhere, the draws for the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League and Europa League took place last week. There is little to do now but speculate about the matchups, since the teams that were drawn on Friday will be different from the ones that will contest them in February and March.
Finally, Universidad de Chile took home the Copa Sudamerica title behind the heroics of Eduardo Vargas. Many of Europe’s top clubs, including Liverpool, are scouting the Chilean hotshot, but it looks like Napoli will beat everyone to the punch.
