England's top female soccer players won't just wear their hearts on their sleeves during games. They will sport their Twitter handles as well.
Women's Super League (WSL), England's top flight, has launched an initiative aimed at bringing its star players closer to their fans. One player on each of the WSL's eight teams will wear a patch bearing her Twitter name, according to the BBC.
"We're trying to be really innovative about how we can capture the imagination of the public," England head coach Hope Powell said.
"Digital media is the way things are going. Each WSL club has a digital media ambassador that will be at the forefront to engage with fans, to let the general public know what is going on and make players more accessible and reach a wider audience."
The second WSL season kicks off on Saturday and runs until mid-October. Unlike its male counterpart, Arsenal lifted the championship trophy in the league's inaugural season.
Rather than depending on television for public attention and exposure, the league is promoting its stars on the internet. Stephanie Houghton, Laura Bassett, Siobhan Chamberlain, Claire Rafferty, Julie-Ann Russell, Jill Scott, Megan Harris and Liverpool's Aroon Clansey have been appointed "digital media ambassadors."
