Soccer can have its dull moments, and fans fill the empty times in the game by doing all sorts of things.
Some let their minds wander, others play with their phones and some even sleep, as one Southampton fan was caught doing on Sunday.
The unidentified fan was napping in his seat in second half of Southampton’s game against Manchester United, but he was shaken from his slumber by an improbable goal.
The game was tied 1-1 in the 55th minute, when Southampton hero Ricky Lambert swung a cross into the vistors’ penalty area. It was a situation for which United was prepared to defend, but defender Patrice Evra slipped, giving Morgan Schneiderlin a free header.
The Southampton midfielder made no mistake with the finish, heading it past goalkeeper David de Gea and sending Southampton fans into a state of ecstacy.
The sleeping fan lifted the brim of his cap and celebrated the go-ahead goal. He turned to the young boy next to him — possibly his son — to share in the joy, but the kid couldn’t have been fooled by the man’s crocodile cheers. We certainly weren’t.
Unfortunately for the man, the good times wouldn’t last forever. The game came to life in the second half, as Robin van Persie scored two second-half goals to give United a 3-2 win.
