Ellen DeGeneres started something that we all must endure: famous people taking group selfies in public.
Three Arsenal players — goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, defender Kieran Gibbs and forward Lukas Podolski — were so happy in the immediate aftermath of their team’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham in a Premier League game Saturday that they wanted to capture the moment for posterity.
We’re not sure where the phone came from, but Szczsney took a selfie on the field at White Hart Lane alongside his two teammates. Arsenal’s traveling fans provided the backdrop for the famous shot.
Podolski uploaded the photo to his Instagram account, and Szczesny did the same on Facebook.
While hosting the Oscars last month, DeGeneres took a selfie with a number of A-list Hollywood celebrities. She posted the photo on Twitter, and it was retweeted more than 2.5 million times in under two hours.
The Arsenal selfie didn’t match those gaudy numbers, but a future soccer selfie just might. After all, the 2014 FIFA World Cup starts in less than three months.
