Ghana’s World Cup fate was partially decided by an unlucky own goal.
Portugal midfielder Miguel Veloso’s shot went off the foot of Ghana’s John Boye before heading into the net, giving Portugal a 1-0 first-half lead in Thursday’s Group G game in Brazil.
Ghana later tied the game, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s 80th-minute goal gave Portugal a 2-1 win that send Team USA into the Round of 16 despite the Americans’ 1-0 loss to Germany.
Ghana went into Thursday’s game down two key players because of suspensions.
