Brendan ShanahanStephane Quintal, the former Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens defenseman, has been named the NHL’s senior vice president of player safety, taking over for Brendan Shanahan.

The league announced the news Monday.

“Stephane Quintal has been dedicated to the mission of the Department of Player Safety since its creation for the opening of the 2011-12 season and has demonstrated over the last several months that he is uniquely suited to lead the department going forward,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement.

“Brendan Shanahan established and built a highly-functioning and well-run department in his three years at its helm. Among his most important decisions was hiring Stephane Quintal to be part of his supervisory team.”

Quintal had served in the role on an interim basis since April, after Shanahan left the position to join the Toronto Maple Leafs’ front office.

Shanahan succeeded Colin Campbell as the NHL’s head of player safety on June 1, 2011. Shanahan significantly improved the department, highlighted by the use of detailed videos explaining why a player was or wasn’t suspended. No other sport does a better job breaking down a suspendable play.
