BOSTON — The Bruins appeared destined for their first overtime game of the season Monday afternoon.
Then, this happened:
That was Colorado Avalanche center Daniel Briere, who slapped a rebound past Bruins backup goaltender Niklas Svedberg with just 0.4 seconds remaining in the third period to give the Avalanche a 2-1 win.
The victory extended Colorado’s streak of dominance in the Bruins’ building. In their last nine visits to TD Garden, the Avs hold a record of 8-0-1.
“It sucks,” said Svedberg, who finished with 28 saves in his first start of the season. “Of course. It was a tight game. Both teams played a tight game. Both teams wanted the win badly, so it’s a tough way to lose it.”
Briere’s goal — the 300th of his 17-year NHL career — was his first in an Avalanche uniform and gave Colorado its first win of the season.
“Hopefully, there are many more to come, but it’s certainly a good feeling to find a loose puck like that late in the game and get a big win especially after the start that we had,” Briere said after the game. “It’s been a little bit of a roller-coaster to start the season, but we are hoping this game will get us on our way.”
Briere putting up numbers against the Bruins is no new phenomenon. With his latest goal, the 37-year-old has racked up 43 points against Boston in his career. Only the Toronto Maple Leafs (44) have allowed more.
