Brandon Bolden is listed as a running back on the New England Patriots’ roster, but he proved his worth in a different capacity Sunday night against the San Diego Chargers.
Playing on the Patriots’ punt-coverage team in the second quarter, Bolden came flying in off the left edge. To say he blocked Mike Scifres’ punt would be an understatement.
That had to hurt.
Not only did Bolden get both hands on the ball, he also sent the Chargers punter spinning through the air, causing him to land awkwardly on his left side. Scifres suffered a shoulder injury and was carted off the field by medical staff. He officially was ruled out for the rest of the game, per the Chargers’ Twitter account.
The injury proved to be significant, as punting duties were left to Nick Novak, the Chargers’ placekicker. He didn’t fare too well on his first punt, which went just 27 yards.
