The Pittsburgh Penguins added some much-needed depth Friday.

The Penguins acquired forward David Perron from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2015 NHL draft and forward Rob Klinkhammer.

Pittsburgh again is among the NHL’s elite teams, sitting first in the Metropolitan Division and second in the Eastern Conference. However, a rash of injuries, illnesses and everything in between has left the Penguins looking to bolster their lineup. They should do that with Perron.

Perron, who’s 26, has the ability to be a solid top-six forward, although his stats haven’t shown that this season. He had just five goals and 14 assists in 38 games this season for the Oilers. However, it’s not unreasonable to believe he’ll see an uptick in Pittsburgh with an obviously much better roster around him.

The 2007 first-round pick also is just one year removed from the best season of his career. He registered 28-29-57 totals last season. Perron is signed through next season and carries a $3.8 million salary cap hit, according to CapGeek.com.

Klinkhammer has appeared in just 10 games this season with the Penguins.
