Red Sox’s Brock Holt Reflects On Extra Special Valentine’s Day Memory

The weeks surrounding Valentine’s Day have a whole different meaning for Boston Red Sox utility man Brock Holt.

That’s because Holt proposed to his now-wife, Lakyn, on March 4, 2013. The couple had just reunited after Lakyn spent Valentine’s Day, which also is her birthday, back home in Pennsylvania, according to MLB.com’s Ian Browne.

Holt recently told Browne he proposed in Fort Myers, Fla., while on an after-dinner walk along the beach. It wasn’t a crazy proposal — some of Holt’s Red Sox teammates suggested more elaborate plans — but it reflected the couple’s laid-back personalities.

‘That’s more my style,” Holt told Browne. “I kind of had a plan of what I wanted to do, but whenever I mentioned it, they were like, ‘You can’t do it like that.’ It kind of got in my head a little bit. I was like, ‘The beach is pretty romantic, so I can do that.’ ”

Lakyn, who liked how Holt went about everything, told Browne she was “absolutely shocked” when her then-boyfriend got down on one knee. While there might have been some butterflies involved, Holt didn’t tip his hand until it was time for the big moment.

“I think I surprised her,” Holt said. “I did a good job keeping it cool throughout dinner and not really spilling the beans. I don’t think I was too nervous, because I figured she’d say, ‘Yes.’ ”

Yes, she said, “Yes.”
