A man who thrived fighting for rebounds now reportedly is fighting for his life.

Former New York Knicks forward Anthony Mason suffered a massive heart attack several days ago and is in critical condition, according to multiple reports. Former New York Post columnist Peter Vecsey was the first to report the news via Twitter on Wednesday, adding that Mason since has undergone multiple surgeries at a New York hospital.

According to Vescey, Mason already was in the hospital taking tests for a heart issue when he suffered the heart attack.

Mason, 48, played 13 seasons in the NBA, averaging 10.9 points and 8.3 rebounds during his career. His longest tenure with one team came during a five-season stint with the Knicks from 1991-96, where he thrived coming off the bench and earned NBA Sixth Man of the Year honors in 1995. Mason also played for the New Jersey Nets, Denver Nuggets, Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat before finishing his career with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2003.

The Knicks and ex-teammate Mark Jackson took to Twitter recently to offer their prayers.
